CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Rolling out of bed, I snag my phone and shove it in my pocket. Illy jumps at me out of nowhere. “What was that for?” I ask him, holding him up to be eye level with me. His tongue flicks out and scratches against the tip of my nose.

I laugh and cradle him to my body before exiting the room. Everyone is gathered in the small kitchen watching Machai who has a phone pressed to his ear. Walking between them, I open the pantry then grab the small can I’m looking for, and a bowl from the cupboards. I set Illy on the counter then peel open the can. Illy’s nose twitches and his tail starts to sway. I take a bite of a chunk of tuna then drain the liquid from the can and empty the contents into the bowl.

Illy watches me as he slowly creeps towards the bowl. I busy myself with throwing away the can and washing my hands. Illy is nose deep in the bowl when I turn back. I run a hand along his back and notice how happy he is. His tail flicks back and forth.

The feeling of his energy tells me that he doesn’t really need to eat due to his running solely on magical powers, though I do suppose he enjoys the taste of the food just as much as the next cat.

“Sawyer, can we talk for a minute?” She looks up at me then nods.

“Of course.”

We walk into the bedroom and both sit down on the bed. “So there’s this boy I met.” Her eyebrows raise and a smile plays at her lips. “When I first met him I didn’t really feel anything for him but as I got to know him, we laughed and talked for hours. Now I–I don’t know how to explain it.”

“You have feelings for this boy.” Sawyer supplies. I give a shy nod. “Has this ever happened to you before?”

I think about it for a moment then remember a boy I met on the playground when I was six. I had snuck out of the house and gone down the street to the closest playground. The boy was the only other one there and we made fast friends. I would sneak out everyday until I got caught.

Thinking back on it now I felt a similar way about him that I do now about Peter. The only difference is that back then it was more childish and innocent and now I feel like I want to be with Peter. To be his girlfriend and maybe someday something more.

“Yeah, when I was little.”

“From what it sounds like you might be demiromantic or demisexual like one off my cousins. I’ll send you some links to a few articles about it. When you read the articles you can decide for yourself if it sounds like the right fit for you. I can also send you a few other links about asexuality and gray asexuality as well.” I thank her and together we walk back out to the kitchen.
